Most TrueNAS users and folks who know about FreeNAS know that they've always been the ZFS guys, open source guys with products based on FreeBSD. TrueNAS-Scale brings something new to the true NAS ecosystem family, something that's been asked for many, many years now, which is the ability to run things on a Linux base instead of FreeBSD and unlock some other features. So some of the biggest things they're bringing to the party with this TrueNAS-scale version is, of course, scale out, hence the name scale, which uses technologies such as Gluster and other open source technologies to allow you to build clusters of TrueNAS's, and probably the other most requested feature ever, which is running containers directly on your trueNAS box.
