In this clip, W. Curtis Preston, CEO & Principal Analyst with Backup Central (www.backupcentral.com) leads the Restore It All podcast with Prasanna Malaiyandi, Sr. Architect w. Zoom and Doron Pinhas, CTO of Continuity Software to discuss the state of storage and backup in the industry.
A few years ago, Doron and the Continuity Software team identified a gap in standard research assessing the maturity level of the storage and backup market. Using their technology, they began collecting configuration data from various storage and backup devices. This year, they examined around 10,000 storage devices from about 250 large enterprises. The data showed that the majority of these systems had significant misconfigurations related to storage and backup. Most IT professionals in storage and backup aren't necessarily security experts, and lapses in security can have serious consequences.
Prasanna Malaiyandi inquires about the specifics of their evaluation criteria. Doron explains that security in storage and backup encompasses various facets. Basic elements include ensuring software is up-to-date with patches, and that default accounts (like factory settings) are modified. More advanced practices include adhering to vendor recommendations for best practices. The team also considers external guidelines and standards like the NIST framework and ISO documents on storage security to create a comprehensive automated checklist.
In essence, the podcast emphasizes the significance of securing storage and backup systems, highlighting the prevailing oversights in the industry and emphasizing the need for professionals to prioritize security.
